As of September 30 this year dairy farmers in the area of the Santa Lucia basin are required to register a soil management plan. A similar requirement was implemented three years ago for crop farmers throughout Uruguay.
This new requirement for dairy farmers in this area is established to monitor water quality of the river Santa Lucia which provides drinking water for the capital Montevideo.
The requirement applies to all dairy farmers in the area with more than 50 dairy cows in production. The soil management plan has to include the use of fertilizers on the farm. It is estimated that the new requirement applies to approx. 1.500 dairy farmers in this important dairy region within Uruguay.
