Horticulture and fruticulture in Uruguay are relatively small sectors, often family owned operations and aimed at domestic markets. Very different from cattle and grain sectors where most of the output is exported to international markets (read China). In November 2020, the new Parque Agroalimentario will be opened. This will be the most important site for trade in fruits and vegetables in Uruguay. It means a move from the center of Montevideo to the outskirts where many farmers are located. It is also relatively close to the Port of Montevideo. At this new site, there will be place for auction of products and sales to retailers. Besides that, there will be a separate area for logistical purposes. Approximately 5.000 employees will have their job in this place. The building projects means an enormous incentive for horticulture and fruticulture in Uruguay.
