The promotion of sustainable use of natural resources in agriculture has been supported by creating investigation and financial support for irrigation projects. Annual rainfall in Uruguay accumulates to 1200 mm (47 inch), but only 5% is used efficiently.
State bank BROU offers up to 80% credit with a 10 to 15 year term for investment in irrigation. BROU receives financial back up for this credit program by the Inter American Bank (125 M USD) and City Bank (200 M USD). There are 4 potential irrigation projects of which two qualify for the specific credit program, which is agri-business oriented between 50 and 200 hectares or corporate projects between 400 and 2000 hectares.
