An article in Biofore relates about the start of successful forestry operations in Uruguay 25 years ago. After incentives for forestry operations were introduced by the Uruguayan authorities Shell and Finnish Kymmene were the first international enterprises to invest in renewable energy production and pulp production.
New eucalyptus species were introduced to fit Uruguayan soil and climate. Plantations are now FSC and PEFC certified.
In addition to creating new jobs and economic growth the large pulp mills in Uruguay have contributed to social and environmental local developments.
