Dairy farms are closing almost daily. In April, no less than 24 dairy farms that were selling their milk to CONAPROLE (the main dairy cooperative) stopped their milking activity. Earlier this year dairy cooperative Pili in Paysandú ceased its activity entirely. High production costs and relatively low dairy prices have led to a very negative outlook for this sector in Uruguay. A situation that exists in several countries worldwide. Apparently, dairy prices are not sustainable and larger part of the revenues should go to the primary producers. Other alternatives are obviously improvements in efficiency by enlarging scale and implementing more automation.
